The Importance of Incorporating Internet Marketing Into Your Marketing Strategy

For over a decade, companies have been using the Internet to market their goods and services to targeted customers. Few homes in today’s society are without the Internet, yet many companies still fail to see the importance the Internet plays in modern-day marketing. If your organization or business has yet to discover the important role Internet marketing can play in helping to broaden your horizons, perhaps you should consider the following facts:
- With the availability and use of the Internet increasing by leaps and bounds with each passing year, a transformation has been taking place in they way consumers do research on the goods and services that they buy. Many customers still talk to friends, read magazines, visit stores and get information from sales people about specific brands and types of goods, but an ever-increasing number of people are doing research via the Internet before a purchase is made. Rather than go from store-to-store to compare different makes of cars, for example, many modern-day consumers use search engines to look up information on the different brands from the comfort of their own home. Because of this easy access to information, the Internet is quickly becoming the prime location for most consumers to gather the information they need, and those who fail to use the Internet for marketing purposes will be left behind in the dust. Young people who have been raised with the Internet will be making a majority of the purchases in a few years, and they will naturally use the Internet as their main source for research and purchases.
- Using the Internet, it is much easier to target the type of consumer you are looking for. When a customer uses the Internet to make a purchase or seek information, a valuable trail of information is left behind so the marketing agent can see how the consumer arrived at their site, what type of goods they purchase at various times, etc. This information can help a company keep track of customer preferences, which will help aid the company in offering better service, which in turn will help to promote better customer loyalty. As all this information on various customers is used, better methods can be used in marketing to specific target customers, rather than randomly sharing your message via the television, radio, newspaper, billboard, or other means. These methods waste a lot of time and money because they don’t have the ability to target a particular type of customer that will offer the most potential.
- The Internet is an excellent venue for promoting “impulse buying”. A potential customer surfing the Internet from the comfort of his or her own home can find a special promotion and make an immediate purchase with no trouble. If the buying process is streamlined, it doesn’t take long to have the purchase completed. This method makes it much easier for the consumer to make a quick “impulse purchase”. A good example of a less effective means of creating an “impulse purchase” would be an infomercial seen on television where the consumer has to get up from the couch and go to the phone to dial the toll-free number listed to get more information and make a purchase. One potential hazard of “impulse buying” that marketing professionals will have to keep an eye on is the potential of the “buy now and pay later” attitude affecting future sales. There is a strong possibility that consumers overloaded by heavy debt will possibly affect future marketing strategies.
- Companies who market their goods and services via the Internet can create the illusion of having more to offer than a competitor who has a “brick-and-mortar” business. Outside suppliers can be used in supplying needed products through your business, yet it will seem to the customer that you are the one providing everything needed for their purchase. This provides a vast marketplace for the consumer, who will save money on gas in addition to time saved traveling to a store or business, and this customer will likely return. As you use the valuable sales history of purchases made by this customer, it will be easier for you to provide good customer service as you market additional products and services to this particular customer.
- Internet marketing strategies are saving a lot of businesses a lot of money. For example, production and shipping expenses are saved when products and services are deliverable in digital form. Another way to save money is through providing information to consumers who previously called paid customer service representatives to get information. Salespeople can refer a customer to the information available on the Internet, thus saving time in explaining every detail and also saving money on expensive printed brochures. This frees the salesperson to offer better service to more customers. It’s easy to see that the Internet can save companies a lot of overhead expense while offering great values and services to the consumers.
- The Internet creates a global presence and provides access to world-wide marketing. Marketers can advertise their goods and services world-wide, no matter where their business is physically located. There are never any guarantees as to how well a product or service will be accepted, but the potential for success is unlimited!
