There Are No Quick Fixes to Search Engine Optimization

I can’t count the times we’ve had people come to us believing that a simple “tweak” of their Meta tags would solve their search engine ranking woes. If getting listed high in search engines were a simple matter of modifying your Meta tags then everyone would be doing it and everyone would have high rankings in search engines. Obviously with billions of website out there it just isn’t possible for everyone to have a high search engine rankings. Change your Meta tags as many times as you’d like – it won’t make a difference.
Why Meta Tags Alone Don’t Work
Its amazing how relevant the results of any given keyword search can be given that search engines have to sift through and analyze billions of bits of data when trying to figure out which websites to display in their search results.
While the information found in the Meta keyword tag can really help narrow down the most relevant website page for website visitors using an internal search engine the Meta keyword tag does little to help increase your ranking in public search engines such as Google. Why? Because internal website search engines and public search engines are completely different animals. For instance, with an internal search engine, there are only a relatively small number of pages for the search engine to sift through when trying to come up with relevant results. In addition, the content and Meta tags on the site are trustworthy, as your goal and that of your internal search engine is the same, to help people find exactly what they’re looking for on your site.
In contrast, public search engine such as Google have to search every page they can locate on the Internet – this is potentially many billions of pages. Plus, unlike internal search engines, public search engines can’t necessarily trust the Meta tags they find since a site owner’s goals may not be the same as the those of the search engine. For example, you would like you website to show up as much as possible for as many keyword phrases as possible in search results irregardless of whether your website is the most relevant website out there. On the other hand, search engines would like to show only the most relevant websites in their search results, whether that is yours or someone else’s.
Starting see why messing with your Meta tags is not the cure? Major search engines are not going to allow you to control your ranking simply by modifying your Meta tags. Fixing your Meta tags won’t fix anything.
Does Content Make A Difference?
Content does make a difference in how well your website shows up in search engines but it is not a quick fix. Developing good content usually takes time. If you’re developing hundreds of pages of content over night chances are its not high quality content. Also, remember that there are no quick fixes to obtaining high search engine rankings. High search engine rankings take time and Google and other top search engines know this. If you attempt to artificially increase your search engine rankings quickly youre likely do more damage than good. Search engines look for websites with good content that has been developed over time.
How Important Are Links?
When it comes to gaining visibility in search engines links are truly important. But again, links do not provide a quick fix solution to obtaining high search engine rankings. Most search engine marketing (SEM) professionals now know to avoid overt “link schemes” but what many still don’t realize is that any attempt to artificially increase link popularity is likely to backfire. If the links to your website look unnatural there is a very good chance that your website will not get listed in search engines no matter how many links you have.
If you want your website to rank well in search engines, stop thinking about your “link popularity” and start focusing on ways to make your website more attractive and useful to your target market. Start thinking of ways to advertise your site and to get it noticed. If your website is high quality, extremely useful and has a lot of appeal to your target market then the links you’re looking for will come without you doing any “artificial” link generation that could get you in trouble with the search engines.
But don’t forget, now matter what you do don’t expect your website to garner a lot of quality search engine rankings overnight – it won’t happen. It can take many months and many of the high ranking websites have been around from many, many years.
The Best Way to Achieve Desirable Long-term Results
Now matter how you approach your search engine optimization campaign it is important to always remember that achieving and maintain high rankings for useful keyword searches takes time and patience. You should think of your search engine optimization campaign as a long-term investment for your website.
The following are just a few tips to help you in your journey:
- Make sure that you perform in-depth keyword research and analysis. This includes finding relevant keyword phrases (using a reputable keyword suggestion software/tool) and identifying which keywords you can realistically target based on your resources. If own a car sales website, are a novice website marketer and don’t have a lot of cash to invest in online marketing then you should not optimize your site for the keyword “cars” as you’ll be up against Ford, Toyota and a large number of car megasites.
- Make sure that your website is not graphic intensive as graphics cannot be read by search engine spiders that visit your website. Any time you can replace a graphic with text, do so.
- Make sure that your website content is natural and easy-to-understand. Your content should also contain the keyword phrases that you’d like your site to rank highly for.
- Make certain that your Title tags and link anchor text are supported by the content of your website.
- And lastly, be patient. Google, and I believe other search engines as well, do not rank new websites. Be prepared to wait 9 months or more before you start seeing any “organic” traffic from Google.
